Today I'm spotlighting a dude that's definitely part of a movement to bring back a certain rawness and edge to Hip Hop that's clearly been missing... My man Roderick Smith was the first to put me on to D-Rock Damon Montgomery! When I tell you this brother is the truth, I tell no lies! He brings that raw, real, unapologetic vibe to Hip Hop that was one of the reasons I fell in love with Hip Hop in the first place. When you hear him rhyme, you can feel the realness as well as the hunger that a true Artist brings to the game! He hasn't been watered down or tampered with due to a need to compromise his lyrics or art. Like I said before, when an Artist is true to their craft and themselves, it comes out in the material they release. One of the dopest rhymes I heard from him comes from his song "Closer to My Dreams 2.5", it goes,
"Man I rather have a job, than live a life of crime, rather made me
some dollars, than be waisting time, N***s rottin' in a cell, that's
the waist of a mind, when I rap I get away, elevation of mind..."
Now if this dude ain't the truth, I don't know who is! I love Hip Hop!
